RECAP: MEMBERSHIP APPRECIATION 2022

Each and every year we extend thanks to our members and celebrate all that was accomplished. On Wednesday, July 27, we visited our (new) favorite spot, Flint Kitchen + Bar, where members were able to catch up with one another while enjoying cocktails and toasting to another successful year.

Did we mention that AAF Buffalo was also named Club of the Year for the fourth year in a row?

Thank you again to our members, we wouldn’t have been able to do this without your support and dedication to the Buffalo community.

That’s a wrap on this year! We’ll see you next time.

RECAP: Spotlight Speaker Jordan Wong

In the monotony of the everyday grind (especially post-pandemic) it can be extremely easy to feel uninspired, lost, or a little unsure of what move to make next in your career. From those starting out to those who’ve been there for a while, it’s common to question your path and lose your way towards your passion. But luckily for us, we were able to snag our personal bit of inspiration, straight in from Cleveland.

On Wednesday, June 22, we had the honor of hosting Jordan Wong (WONGFACE) an artist who specializes in large scale installation pieces as a spotlight speaker at Hallwalls Cinema in downtown Buffalo. Jordan presented his journey through college and the struggle of entering the workforce – only to find that it wasn’t what he wanted or expected once he got there. After being fired from his first job, he brought us on the journey to how he made the decision to become his own boss and fight for his passion of creating his own art. Clearly, the fight was won and Jordan has since created his own personal style as an artist pulling from his culture, childhood, and experiences, that has now been showcased larger than life in multiple museums and throughout Cleveland.

Jordan’s challenges through his own career path felt very familiar and relatable to say the least, but his go-getter attitude (and fantastic visual aids) made you feel ready to go out and make a change for yourself. By the end of his talk, his lessons learned from his own journey had seemed to have inspired the audience to question their passions as well and figure out how to make them happen. (And judging by the line queuing up to see him at the end of his talk, it clearly hit home.)

Between the amazing space provided by Hallwalls and Jordan Wong himself, we cannot wait to see what Jordan does next and are excited to see any passions that reveal themselves after this talk from the other attendees.

RECAP: AdTrivia 2022

Did you know the NASDAQ stock symbol for SouthWest Airlines is LUV? Yeah, neither did we.

AAF Buffalo kicked-off the first yearly AdTrivia where agencies gathered at Flint Kitchen + Bar to compete and answer questions around advertising, pop culture and beyond. The eight teams definitely brought the heat, but only one team came out on top – Crowley Webb’s very own ‘The Answer Prancers’  – congrats! It’s safe to say that attendees left with a whole new bank of knowledge, enjoying an evening filled with fun facts, great food and lots of laughs.

We look forward to making this a yearly tradition, bringing advertising professionals together to let loose, network and partake in some healthy competition.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended or participated in any of this year’s events! For more info on all of our programming for the club year, check out AAFBuffalo.com/events.

RECAP: Headshots & Hops

AAF Buffalo is proud to have hosted its first ever Headshots & Hops on Thursday, April 7 at the iconic Seneca One Tower. As the name suggests, this event lended an opportunity for the ad community to gather for an evening of networking, IPAs, and best of all, professional headshots to spruce up those LinkedIn profiles. With more than 40 people in attendance, including club members, college students, and board members, we’re grateful to FIFTEEN for sponsoring the photography and to Seneca One for providing us with arguably the coolest new venue in Buffalo.

Headshots are an art — and our photographer, Brianna DeJoy, created masterpieces. It was a fun way to get together, get a new pic, have a drink and make new friends,” said Jordan Lema, founder of Lemur Studios & AAF Board Member.

A senior at Villa Maria College, Bridget, said “”I love how my headshots turned out! Brianna is such a talented photographer. I’ll keep an eye out for more AAF events, I really enjoyed it and would look forward to attending others.”

So for Brianna, and all of you readers interested in attending the next AAF event, visit our website at aafbuffalo.com/events or follow us on social media to stay up to date!

RECAP: BRANDHACK 2022

Brand Hack was back in person this fall for a fun-filled morning of branding excitement last week.

The student event was held by AAF Buffalo at Daemen College and was free for AAF student members. This year’s featured organization was Candles in the S.U.N., a local nonprofit that uplifts the Buffalo community through extra curricular youth activities, mentorship and donation drives.

The morning kicked off with some branding 101 tips and a creative briefing from AAF: Buffalo’s Education Committee Chair, Noah Herman, along with opening remarks from Dakarai Singletary, Head of Candles in the S.U.N.. Armed with ideas and their pencils, students took to their sketchbooks alongside the Pros. Art Directors from Crowley Webb, Gelia and Renoun Creative collaborated with students on logo concepts for the organization. Students benefited from getting an inside look at the brainstorming process from professionals in the advertising field. Distilling the best concepts, incorporating type and color were the finishing touches as the clock ticked ever closer to the finish line.

After the students finished their work, they presented their concepts to Dakarai, walking him through each component of their work. Dakarai raved about each concept, finding something of worth from each piece. For example, he loved Coolt McAndrew’s logo, which he felt would make a great piece for the company’s youth sports jerseys. Karion Carter’s graphics would be great for donation drives, and Katelynn Stechsor’s badge logo made him think of ways to implement this idea onto t-shirts.

Ultimately, Emma Lonnen’s logo was the winning concept to be chosen by Dakarai to move forward with for the company’s logo rebrand. Dakarai felt Emma’s concept successfully took Candles in the S.U.N. s original logo to the next level without changing directions.

Congratulations Emma and students for completing this year’s edition of the Brand Hack! We are looking forward to seeing you again at next month’s Portfolio Seminar. Stay tuned for details!

RECAP: Johnathan Worden

Johnathan Worden, a leader in organizational and management development, made a side gig as a children’s book author; and it all happened by accident. “Mr. Moose Caboose Finds His Way”, the first in the series The Great Dane Chronicles, is the finished product of a pandemic project that Worden sought out after in honor of his great dane dog, Moose. As the muse behind this book, Worden channeled Moose’s behaviors and interactions with other humans and dogs from puppyhood to adulthood and how the shift impacted not only Moose, but also Worden and his husband, Nick.

Worden shared his story with attendees of this AdWeek event at The Barrel Factory in Buffalo. He started the conversation with the exploration of the audience’s own goals and dreams — things they want but haven’t fully gone after yet. Worden used Mentimeter to engage the audience through their smartphones. He asked things like what the audience’s goals are, what’s holding them back, what they do for work and/or a side gig, and other prompts that got the audience engaged.

With stacks of signed books behind him, Worden took the time to go through his book and add in the details behind it – ones that children wouldn’t necessarily understand; and he even gave the audience a peek into his upcoming book in the series: “Mr. Moose Caboose and the Lavender Goose.”

After his presentation, all audience members got a signed book from Worden and walked away with an altered perspective and new found inspiration for their own personal goals.

RECAP: ADWEEK HIRING SKILLSHOP 2021

We kicked off AdWeek on October 4th with an informative panel on employee recruitment and retention!

Althea Luehrsen, CEO of Leadership Buffalo, guided our three panelists through a discussion about the challenges of recruiting and retaining employees.
Shannon Bryant, Chief Diversity Officer for Kaleida Health spoke to the challenges to bring diversity to an executive team made up mostly of racial and generational inequities. Tricia Barrett, Chief Operating Officer for Crowley Webb, discussed the different benefits, opportunities, and culture her employees are provided with to keep them satisfied, challenged, and happy while combating a highly poachable industry. And Elizabeth Woike-Ganga, Chief Executive Officer for Best Self, offered her insight into the challenges
of hiring employees and the struggle of employee retention with so many other opportunities available for clinicians.

About 25 professionals across advertising and other industries gathered in the atrium of 500 Seneca to hear what these much-credited panelists had to say, and they did not disappoint!

Thank you to Althea, Shannon, Tricia, and Elizabeth for all their fresh insight during this challenging time of employee engagement.

COVID-19 Return to Work – Agency Roundtable

In early May, AAF Buffalo facilitated a Zoom conference among several small and large WNY advertising agencies to discuss returning to work following the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this discussion was to promote idea sharing across WNY’s advertising leaders so that we all can implement the most effective return to work policies possible in a post-COVID-19 world.

The document represents ideas where consensus was reached that agencies should consider implementing, if resources allow.

Recap: Preview Night

Last week, Buffalo flexed its creative muscles, displaying entries to this year’s American Advertising Awards at our annual Preview Night.

Overall, there were 526 entries to this year’s ADDYs, with each sprawled across Big Ditch Brewing’s space to receive the recognition it deserves.

Our club also broke a record this year for student entries, with 59 total. The increased student engagement is, as always, encouraging for our future pipeline of industry talent.

Along with the viewing of our region’s top work from the year, industry professionals were able to network with colleagues and between agencies, showing the camaraderie of our community.

A big thank you to the team at FARM, as well as Shannon Silva, for their help in coordinating the night’s events.

The ADDY Awards will be held on March 6. Make sure to get your tickets here.
